§         An Overview of Eating Disorders /  M.Nasser

ABSTRACT : The paper describes the nature and the evolution of the syndromes of eating disorders and the progress that has been made in understanding their causal determinants. An emphasis has been placed on the socio-cultural theory of causation pointing to the recent epidemiological findings in this field. There is also a reference to the surveys conducted in the Arab world, which indicate that eating disorders are starting to emerge in Arab societies possibly with similar rates to that reported in the West.

§         Effects of Mood Abnormality on Responses to A   personality Questionnaire /  F.El-Islam , Abdel Razek

ABSTRACT : The effects of depressed, anxious and suspicious moods on patients responses to the Eysenck personality Questionnaire was tested in 115 patients suffering from depressive, anxiety and paranoid schizophrenic disorders. Patients personality assessment scores improved when they remitted but did not improve when they failed to remit. Relatives assessment of patients personality yielded scores which were close to patients own assessment scores after remission. Because the mood state affects tests designed to measure premorbid personality traits, caution is necessary in looking for personality disorders during disorders which disturb patients mood.

§         Can Psychiatrists Predict Non-Attenders at Out- Patient Clinics ? Loglinear Analysis on 445 Patients  /  T.Daradkeh , N.Al-Zayer

ABSTRACT : To investigate the predictors of non-attendance at the out-patient psychiatric clinic loglinear analysis was performed on the social and diagnostic factors of 445 newly assessed patients. Regardless of the sex of the patients, the clear characteristics of non-attenders are those over the age of 35 years and at the same time they are married and suffer from mild psychiatric disorders. As the identified non-attenders are less ill, more likely to be mature and more likely to have the support of a marital  relationship, their non-attendance is not a cause for concern.

§         Neuropsychiatric Complications of Typhoid Fever /  H.Najim , A.Ali

ABSTRACT : No national study could be found on the subject of neuropsychiatric complications of typhoid fever. The present attempt estimates the frequency of such complications amongst (125) typhoid fever patients to be (12%). Patients were mainly admitted to psychiatric wards rather than medical or neurological wards of the Mosul teaching hospital. These complications included catatonia, reported here for the first time, encephalitis, paranoid psychosis, neurotic depression, hysteria and migraine. No sex difference was detected. Physical findings of typhoid  fever should be thoroughly investigated before labeling any psychiatric manifestations and emotional disturbances a primary psychiatric illness.

§         Mental Symptoms Among Chronic (Hashish) Abusers  /  A.Moharninad

ABSTRACT : The development of specific mental syndromes after chronic (Hashish) abuse has been well-known for decades. However the development of psychosis is still controversial. This study shows that psychosis and some other syndromes can develop in chronic Hashish abusers, specially those who smoke it in large amounts and over long periods of time. The severity of symptoms seems to be related to the amount and duration of abuse. This study was done on (60) chronic male Hashish abusers. All of them were Afghan Refugees who have been living in Pakistan for average (7) years. They have been smoking Charas  (a variety of Hashish prepared from cannabis) in average amount of  (4) gms/day and for average duration of (9) years. The final diagnosis was: Cannabis Psychosis in 53,3%, simple abuse in 16,7%, neurotic (anxiety-depression) in 13,4%, delusional disorder in 11,7% and 3,3%, were having features of Amotivational Syndrome.

§         Tardive Dystonia " The Significance of Adequate   Documentation and Early Recognition " / H.Al-Maleh , A.Al-Tahan

ABSTRACT :  Tardive dystonia has recently been emphasised in the literature as a complication of the long term use of antipsychotic medications. Compared with the long and better known tardive dyskinesia, it is more disabling and more difficult to manage. The authors report  the development of tardive dystonia in a young Saudi male with a Schizophrenic Disorder which has been Adequately Documented and followed up. An early sign of "Repetitive forced  jaw opening" is reported.

§         Mental Hygiene According to Abu-Zayd AI-Balkhy  /  E.B.Taha

ABSTRACT : In his book (The management of organic and mental hygiene) Abu Zayd Al-Balkhy devoted almost half of this volume elucidating his views on the nature of mental hygiene, psychological adjustment, abnormal psychology as well as the management of irritability, fear, depression and obsessions. The book, authored over 1200 years ago, seems to appeal to modern psychiatric thinking in more than one way. For one thing al-Balkhy's book advances the thesis of holistic and psychosomatic medicine in an extremely lucid and progressive style. Furthermore, the book identifies anxiety and mood disorders and the factors precipitating them in a way which could not be more familiar to 20th century psychology. Finally al-Balkhy adopts a cognitive behaviorist stance in his psychotherapy with methods similar to those of Wolpe and Lazarus.
