§         TRADITIONAL HEALING FXPERIENCIES IN PATIENTS  ATTENDING A UNIVERSITY OUTPATIENT CLINIC  / Abdullah AI-Subaie

ABSTRACT : Traditional medicine is one of the two major health systems in Saudi Arabia. In this study, patients who are attending the Psychiatric clinic at the University Hospital for the first time are asked about their experiences concerning  traditional healing according to a specifically designed data gathering sheet. Women used traditional medicine more often, but education and employment did not seem to play a role in the choice of traditional medicine over modern medicine. The most common traditional diagnosis was the evil eye, and the most rendered treatment was reading the Koran. Both traditional and psychiatric diagnoses were equally distributed in both sexes and psychiatrists did not  seem to agree with traditional healers to group certain symptoms  to form a diagnosis. Also, psychiatric disorders were found to have a similar distribution in traditional and non-traditional medicine users.

§         CHANGES IN SEXUAL FUNCTION IN IEPILEPTICS / M.Y. El-Senosy, M.O. Rabie and S. Gad

ABSTRACT : This study was conducted on forty epileptic patients, twenty with generalised tonic-clonic seizures, twenty with complex partial seizures and twenty controls. All patients were examined clinically, including detailed information concerning their sexual functions, (libidinous feelings, erotic fantasies, frequency of arousal and orgasm). It was found that hyposexuality is significantly more common in epileptics compared to the controls and in complex partial  seizure patients compared to generalised tonic-clonic seizure patients.  The commonest pattern  encountered was found to be an impaired  erection but a normal libido. In this study hyposexuality was seen to be more common when the age of onset of illness occurred before puberty, and thus being of long duration. Frequency of fits and regimen of therapy has no significant correlation.

§         MIXED ANXIETY DEPRESSION IN PREGNANCY  (The Influence of Misconceptions) / T. F Ahmad, R. Suleiman and D. Shaugah

ABSTRACT : The effects of pregnancy on mental health were investigated by comparing the presence of depression, anxiety disorder and misconceptions among pregnant women and non-pregnant women. The sample of this study consisted of 50 pregnant women, selected randomly from the ante natal clinic in King Hussein Medical Center, compared with 50 control women, matched for sociodemographic, age and educational background. All subjects were interviewed individually and asked to complete two self rating questionnaires. The Arabic version of the Beck Depression Inventory and the Arabic Version of the State Trait Anxiety Scale. Open question relating to conceptions toward pregnancy and delivery were also asked. Results indicated that women who were pregnant, secured a significantly higher rate of depression and anxiety. Significant correlations between some negative thoughts and anxiety were also obtained. The implication of these results supports the idea that negative cognitive attitudes and beliefs may result in depression or anxiety disorders.

§         THE PHILOSOPHY OF INVOLUNTARY NOSPITALIZATION,  WITH A STUDY OF ISLAMIC JURISPRUDENCE POSITION / G. A. AI-Okaily & K. S. Chaleby

ABSTRACT : There is a long history of state involvement into legal detainment of individuals, suffering from different types of mental disorders. Police power  permits the government  to take action necessary to safeguard the welfare of its citizens. This is done through the doctrine of parents patriae, which allows the state to act on  behalf of its disabled citizens in order  to care and protect. This ultimately has to conflict with the personal freedom and the foundation of civil liberty. A compromised was reached by setting criteria of involuntary hospitalization limit that action to people who meet two conditions, which include: The presence of Mental Illness, secondly danger to self or others, and/or Inability to provide for basic needs. The rationales of these issues are being discussed, with an exploration of the position taken by some Islamic scholars on these matters.
