Dear Colleagues: The co-editors of a new volume on Islamic societies would be delighted to secure your involvement as authors or collaborating authors in the book project to be published by ‘Springer Publishers’ early 2015. The provisional title of the Book is: ‘Social Progress in the Islamic World: Social, Economic, Political, and Ideological Challenges’ (in English). We would be very grateful if you could contribute a chapter of your choice. The book chapters will broadly deal with the following topics (any other propositions are welcome): - Islam, the early centuries - The Golden age of the Islamic World - The Construction of the Ummah: A historical overview - The fragmentation of the Islamic World - The Nahda movements - The Post-Colonial Islamic Societies - The State of Social Progress in Sub-Saharan Africa - The State of Social Progress in the Gulf States - The State of Social Progress in Western Asia (the case of Turkey, The case of Iran...) - The State of Social Progress in South Asia (cases of: Pakistan Afghanistan and Bangladesh) - The State of Social Progress in Islamic states of Southeast Asia (cases of Indonesia and Malaysia) - The State of Social Progress in Successor States of the Former Soviet Union - The State of Social Progress in other Islamic Asian countries (cases of: Jordan, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon) - The State of Social Progress among Muslims Living in Non-Islamic Societies - Islam, Modern times and global challenges - Social Challenges Confronting the Islamic World - Economic Challenges Confronting the Islamic World - Political Challenges Confronting the Islamic World - Women and social progress in Islamic countries - Combating Global Stereotypes and Promoting Mutual Understanding The central goal of the volume is to promote a fuller understanding of the historical and contemporary development contributions (and challenges) that confront societies with predominantly Islamic populations (hereafter “Islamic Societies”) to readers who are not specialists in Islamic studies. The volume is expected to cover all of the MENA countries, those of South and Southeast Asia, and Africa. As possible, we will include other world regions in the discussion as well. The length of individual chapters is expected to be of about 10,000-12,000 words exclusive of charts, tables, maps, and other figures as well as references (i.e., about 35-40 pages double-spaced page in length [using either 8.5x11.0 inches or on A4sized paper). A complete working description of the book project will be sent to interested scholars. To ensure coherence throughout the book, Guidelines for Authors will be also forwarded to you as soon as we receive a positive response from you concerning your willingness to participate in the writing effort. All chapters also will be peer-reviewed by an internationally prominent and intellectually independent group of reviewers. Please also note that the volume also will be published by a major international publisher, Springer Press (Berlin, Dordrecht, London & New York), as part of its highly influential extensive Quality of Life Handbook series (http://www.springer.com/series/8365; andhttp://www.springer.com/social+sciences/book/978-94-007-2420-4?changeHeader). The complete volume is expected to be read by a wide audience of academics, students, governmental ministries, public policy specialists, and members of the educated general public. The volume also is expected to acquire by a large number of libraries throughout the world and, in due course, will be available in electronic form. Given the electronic policies of Springer, and following the print edition, the volume will never go out of print and will eventually be available as an e-book. Further, we will send you short biographical sketches of the volume’s two co-editors in which your chapter will appear, i.e., Prof. Habib Tiliouine of the University of Oran [Oran, Algeria] and Prof. Richard J. Estes [University of Pennsylvania, USA]. These biographical sketches will give you a good sense of our backgrounds as well as the seriousness of our intent and our own competence in bringing together Islamic scholars from throughout the world in this foundational work. Finally, if you identify something of critical importance that we should include in the book we would be very grateful if you would call it to our attention. Also helpful would be the names of 1-2-3 scholars whom we might approach to undertake work on the missing areas.
