q The Aims of the Conference |
||||
§ CONFERENCE PURPOSEThe OVERALL PURPOSE of the conference is to create an open learning community for sharing highly effective skills in Psychology in the Middle East and North Africa. Participants will acquire knowledge and skills which they can implement in their academic and professional lives. Of the multitude who will gather in Dubai, most are in key positions in their respective societies and cultures to model and teach to many more.
§ CONFERENCE GOALS ARE TO: Key individuals and organizations from high risk regions attending the conference are linked with longer term, Intensive Training Programs offered by the conference sponsors and other organizations represented. The purpose here is to create local pools of trainers and facilitators in these regions.
Provide a multidisciplinary open forum for examining new ways of perceiving conflicts, differences, and issues of personal/ regional security, as well as managing them. This year's program includes an added focus on dynamics of terrorism throughout the world, and on issues in the Middle East and North Africa.
From a multicultural community experience to explore conference themes and create a common ground of reference and support. Nurturing a close international community is highly valued by participants. It is essential for engaging and integrating formal learning.
Devote program time for processing, brainstorming, and networking to ensure application and collaborative follow-through between events. Each year dynamic collaborations and association, wether direct action-oriented, education and training, or research in nature, come out of contacts at this conference.
Bring together high quality presenters at a time and place where many who represent societies in turnoil and upheaval, and who would otherwise be excluded due to economics and travel constraints, can participate fully. By design, full registrations from developed countries subsidize the costs of low income participants from economically impoverished societies to help in balancing the economic impact of attending.
Middle East / North Africa Regional Conference on Psychology will collaborate on and support training modules and relevant Psychology in the Middle East and North Africa projects by organizations. In addition, through our networking resources, the sponsors actively assist in linking and facilitating cooperation between groups and individuals.

An invitation to participate in the Middle East and North Africa Regional Conference of Psychology The Conference to be held next December in Dubai, U.A.E., is a very significant event. initiated ten years ago, such regional conferences have offered the opportunity for psychologists from different broad regional areas of the world to gather under the auspices of major international organizations of psychology. This year, the International Union of Psychological Science (IUPsyS) has the primary responsibility for the Conference, with the collaboration of the International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP) and the International Association of Cross-Cultural Psychology (IACCP(
It is my pleasure to invite the psychologists from the Middle East and North Africa to come to Dubai and contribute to the scientific program. It is important that psychologists of the region develop close relationships and engage in new forms of collaboration. The IUPsyS is committed to ensuring that psychology as a science and as a profession attains greater visibility and demonstrates its impact and usefulness for the benefit of society. The Conference themes of sustainable development and peace are of special value. This is why I hope that a large number of psychologists from the academic and the professional fields will contribute to make this event an outstanding success. Michel Denis President, International Union of Psychological Science
This conference will provide the gathering of mental health care professionals throughout the Middle East and North Africa. Responding to continuing education and training in specific areas of professional psychology, workshops on different topics will be led by world renowned experts in areas of clinical, forensic, organizational, educational, marriage and family.
This will be an opportunity to disseminate psychological knowledge and services to the related fields of psychology, which will foster current and future advantages as continuing perspectives in this growing field of expertise.
One goal of this conference is to facilitate the communication between the scientific researchers and the professional psychologists of the different countries of the region to discuss the development and present status of psychology in the Middle Eastern and North African nations and its sustainable development.
We will highlight some of the Middle Eastern and North African scholars' contributions to psychology, showing the contemporary status of psychology in the Middle East and North Africa countries, showing the main trends of research, and the difficulties and obstacles which are hindering its development.
One of the goals of the IUPsyS, as specified in its Statutes, is to promote the development of psychology by helping with the creation of regional organizations of psychology and by promoting the exchange of ideas and the communication of scientific information within these regional organizations.
This is why the IUPsyS has chosen to promote the development of psychology in the Middle East and North Africa by sustaining the organization of a regional conference of psychology in Dubai. Needless to say, that the solid and very experienced convention and touristic infra- structure of Dubai was an important element of our decision, as is the fact that Dubai is centrally located and readily accessible to all psychologist of the region. It is also, as most of you would agree a very pleasant place to be! In the past, many attempts have been made to create a regional umbrella for the different existing Arabic psychology associations, but these attempts failed, mainly because of a lack of support from the international psychological community.
This time, the support is clearly present and we are convinced that we will succeed in brining together all the psychologist of the region with the goal of furthering the development of a vigorous and innovative Arabic psychology where past roots go back to the 9th century.
IUPsyS has selected Dr. Raymond H. Hamden as the chairperson of the conference. An American Psychologist of Arab descent, he has been practicing in Dubai and the UAE since 1990. < rhhamden@hotmail.com >
The Yemen Psychological Association President, Dr. Hassan Kassim Khan, can be contacted at : kassim6@yahoo.com. He is the Associate Professor Chief of the Department of Medical Behavioral Sciences at the faculty of Medicine- Aden University- Yemen.
Our Philosophy The Conference's goal is to promote information about psychology in the Middle East and North Africa and permit all professionals related to that field to attend. The spirit of gathering professionals with the same interests and exchanging knowledge is omnipresent.
On this page you will find the details of the Middle East / North Africa Regional Conference of Psychology

q Call for Papers - English / Arabic |

Roundtables A roundtable is a more informal discussion among people of contrasting or complementary views. Roundtable participants are not expected to deliver a formal paper. The roundtable moderator is responsible for arranging participation of roundtable members. Normally, a roundtable will comprise opening remarks by participants, a discussion among participants, followed by discussion with the audience.
A roundtable proposal should include: (1) The title or theme of the proposed roundtable (2) An abstract (150 words) of its content (3) Participant(s) names, titles, affiliations, addresses, E-mail, phone and fax numbers. (4) Audio-visual equipment required (see Note below).
Oral (paper) presentations Oral (paper) presentations are useful for presenting concepts or arguments or for summarizing data; a paper is not the place for a detailed presentation of data; for this purpose, a poster presentation would be more suitable. All papers submitted will be grouped with others in a paper session of a similar theme. The Scientific Program Committee has final responsibility for the composition of the paper sessions. Presenters will have no more than 20 minutes (presentation of 15 minutes, followed by a 5 minutes discussion) for their presentation. Presenters are expected to bring 25 copies of their paper to the conference for circulation.
Interactive posters An interactive poster presentation consists of an exhibit of materials that report research activities in a visual format. This provides a platform that enables the presenter to interact with their audience and allows conference attendees to browse and discuss material with presenters. Interactive poster sessions will last 2 hours during which time the poster is displayed and the author(s) is(are) present. Posters will be grouped by theme. An interactive poster is particularly useful for presenting data or models. It is not good for presenting a lot of text or an extended argument. Normally, the poster presentation should consist of a maximum of 12 sheets of A4 paper (letter size) or 6 sheets of A3 (which is double the size of A4) or a larger sheet of a similar total size. The typeface should be no smaller than 24 points (to make it easily readable from a meter away). Diagrams and clear tables are excellent, as are bullet points to summarize the argument and findings. The use of colours and pictures are also a great advantage. Presenters should bring 25 copies of their papers for distribution.
All paper and poster submissions should include: (1) The title of the proposed presentation (2) An abstract (150 words) (3) Author(s) name, title, affiliation, address, E-mail, phone and fax numbers. (4) Audio-visual equipment required (see Note below)
A note on audio-visual equipment: Efforts will be made to supply LCD projectors and VCR/TV, at minimal costs. However, each room will be equipped with slide and overhead projectors, at no cost.

It was created over 25 years ago by researchers in psychology who wanted to study culture’s effects on human behavior and development. The behavioral observations that form the basis of the cross-cultural studies are communicated all over the world through publications and regular meetings held typically in conjunction with international congresses. < http://www.iaccp.org >
